If you're considering a smile makeover that includes whitening, veneers, or other cosmetic dentistry, the question of where Invisalign fits in is worth thinking about carefully. The short version: orthodontic alignment almost always comes first. Cosmetic work produces meaningfully better results on properly aligned teeth than on misaligned teeth, regardless of how skilled the cosmetic dentist is.

This page covers the sequencing, what coordinated planning looks like, and how Invisalign fits into a larger aesthetic plan. MHR Orthodontics is run by Dr. Martin Rabinovich, a board-certified orthodontist with a Doctor of Dental Medicine from Rutgers and a three-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Colorado. Consultations are complimentary, and complimentary professional teeth whitening is included with Invisalign treatment at our practice.

Why Invisalign Comes Before Cosmetic Dentistry

Before Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can correct color, shape, and some misalignment — but veneers placed on significantly misaligned teeth either look obviously corrective (because the technician had to compensate) or require more aggressive tooth preparation to fit properly. Neither is ideal.

Invisalign moves the underlying teeth into their correct positions first. The cosmetic dentist then designs the veneers to the properly aligned teeth, producing a more natural-looking and longer-lasting result. The typical sequence: Invisalign (6 to 12 months for a mild case, longer for complex), then 3 to 6 months of retention to stabilize, then veneers on the aligned arch.

Before Whitening

Whitening works the same way on aligned or misaligned teeth — the chemical mechanism is unrelated to tooth position. But whitening makes minor misalignments more visible because the brighter teeth draw the eye more. Some patients who whiten without addressing alignment first end up self-conscious about misalignment that they didn't notice before whitening.

If you're planning both Invisalign and whitening, the typical sequence is Invisalign first, then whitening at the end of orthodontic treatment. At MHR Orthodontics, professional whitening is included complimentary with Invisalign treatment for exactly this reason — the whitening completes the visual transformation right when the alignment is finalized.

Before Bonding or Reshaping

Bonding and tooth reshaping are smaller-scale cosmetic procedures that adjust the shape, edge, or proportion of specific teeth. Like veneers, they produce better results on properly positioned teeth. If you're planning to address chips, length irregularity, or minor shape issues with bonding, Invisalign first gives the bonding work a properly aligned base to work from.

How a Coordinated Smile Plan Comes Together

Step 1: Orthodontic Consultation and Plan Preview

Your Invisalign consultation includes an exam, a digital intraoral scan, and a planned treatment preview generated from your scan. Dr. Rabinovich tells you whether Invisalign is appropriate for your case, how long it would take, and what the projected outcome looks like.

Step 2: Coordinating with Your Cosmetic Dentist

If you already have a cosmetic dentist planning veneers or other cosmetic work, we share the projected orthodontic outcome with them so they can plan the cosmetic work to the aligned teeth. If you don't yet have a cosmetic dentist, we can recommend local practices we've coordinated with before.

Step 3: Invisalign Treatment

Active Invisalign treatment runs for the planned duration. Standard wear schedule (20 to 22 hours per day), progress visits every 8 to 10 weeks. For cosmetic-coordination cases, we focus particularly on the final aesthetic positioning of the front teeth and on any movement that affects how the veneers or other cosmetic work will be designed.

Step 4: Retention + Whitening Window

After active Invisalign treatment, the complimentary professional teeth whitening kit is provided. The whitening typically happens in the first few months of retention, while your retainers are stabilizing the new tooth positions. The retainers themselves can sometimes be used as whitening trays for at-home whitening, depending on which whitening product is provided.

Step 5: Cosmetic Work on the Aligned Arch

Once the alignment has stabilized (typically 3 to 6 months of retention), your cosmetic dentist begins veneers, bonding, or other planned work on the aligned and whitened arch. The result is a coordinated outcome where orthodontics, whitening, and cosmetic work were all planned together rather than improvised one piece at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do Invisalign at MHR and veneers at a different dentist?

Yes, and that's the most common arrangement. Our practice is orthodontics-only, so we don't do veneers in-house. We coordinate with your existing cosmetic dentist or refer to one we've worked with before. The Invisalign planning incorporates whatever veneer plan your cosmetic dentist has in mind.

If I'm getting veneers anyway, can the veneer dentist just correct the alignment with the veneer shape?

To some extent, yes, but with significant tradeoffs. Veneers compensating for misalignment require either more aggressive tooth preparation (removing more enamel to fit a thicker veneer) or accepting a less natural-looking result. For mild misalignment with small veneers, the compromise is sometimes worth it. For moderate misalignment, the Invisalign-first approach produces a meaningfully better result. The deciding factor depends on the specific case — your cosmetic dentist can weigh in on whether your situation falls in the compromise range or not.

How long does the whole sequence take?

Typical timeline for a coordinated smile makeover with Invisalign and veneers: 6 to 12 months for Invisalign active treatment, 3 to 6 months of retention before cosmetic work begins, then 4 to 8 weeks for veneer design and placement. So 12 to 18 months from consultation to final cosmetic completion is a reasonable expectation. Faster for smaller plans, longer for more comprehensive work.

Does insurance cover any of this?

Dental insurance generally covers orthodontic treatment (Invisalign) if the plan has an orthodontic benefit and you're under any applicable age limit. Cosmetic dentistry (veneers, whitening, cosmetic bonding) is almost never covered by dental insurance because it's classified as elective. The Invisalign portion may be partially reimbursed; the cosmetic portion is typically out of pocket. We verify Invisalign benefits at the consultation.

Can I do whitening on my own before Invisalign?

You can, but there's not much point. Whitening results fade over the 9 to 18 months of orthodontic treatment, so any whitening done before Invisalign will be largely gone by the end. The included complimentary whitening at the end of treatment is positioned exactly when whitening makes the most sense — at the completion of alignment, so the result lasts into the next phase.

Book Your Complimentary Consultation

If you're planning a coordinated smile makeover that includes Invisalign and cosmetic work, the next step is a complimentary consultation to map out the orthodontic portion. Dr. Rabinovich will examine your bite, take a digital scan, give you a treatment plan preview, and coordinate with your cosmetic dentist on planning if you have one.

Call (732) 704-5474 or book online at mhrortho.com/contact-us. Mention coordinated cosmetic planning when booking so we know to allow extra time for the sequencing discussion.
