Not every Invisalign case takes 18 months. If your alignment issue is mild — slight crowding of the front teeth, a small gap, a few teeth that have shifted after old orthodontic treatment, or a finishing correction before cosmetic dental work — you may qualify for Invisalign Express or Invisalign Lite. These are shorter treatment paths that complete in 3 to 7 months at a reduced fee.

This page covers what qualifies, what doesn't (even if it looks mild), how the fee structure differs, and how short-term Invisalign fits with cosmetic and restorative dentistry.

What Invisalign Express Is (And Isn't)

Invisalign sells three main treatment tiers, distinguished by the number of aligners and the complexity of movement they can handle:

Invisalign Express (Up to 7 Aligners)

Short-treatment option for mild cases. The aligner series caps at 7 trays, typically worn for about 2 to 4 months of active treatment. Designed for minor crowding (1 to 2 millimeters of total movement), small gaps, and finishing-touch corrections after previous orthodontic work. Lower fee than full Invisalign because fewer aligners and less planning are involved.

Invisalign Lite (Up to 14 Aligners)

Mid-range option for slightly more involved mild cases. Up to 14 aligners over 4 to 7 months of active treatment. Handles slightly more crowding and movement than Express. Fee structure sits between Express and full Invisalign.

Full Invisalign for Reference

Full Invisalign Comprehensive has no aligner cap and can run from a few months to 24 months or more depending on case complexity. This is what's typically discussed when people say "Invisalign" without qualification. For moderate to complex cases, this is the only Invisalign option that works.

The right product depends entirely on case complexity. Express and Lite aren't "cheaper Invisalign" — they're the right Invisalign product for a specific type of mild case. For a case that needs full Invisalign, Express won't deliver the result regardless of price.

Cases That Typically Qualify for Short-Term Invisalign

  • Mild crowding of the front teeth, usually 1 to 3 millimeters of total displacement
  • Small gaps between two or three teeth, especially in the front
  • Minor relapse from previous orthodontic treatment — teeth that have shifted slightly years after teen-era braces
  • Finishing-touch movements before cosmetic dental work like veneers or whitening, where teeth need to be aligned but only slightly
  • Post-restorative adjustment — minor alignment correction after a crown, implant, or bridge has been placed
  • Single-arch treatment when only the upper or lower teeth need correction

Cases That Don't (Even If They Look Mild)

This is the part most websites won't tell you honestly. Several categories of case look mild in a mirror but don't qualify for Express or Lite:

  • Bite issues that look minor but involve the back teeth. The front teeth might look straight while a posterior crossbite or open bite needs significant correction.
  • Mild crowding caused by an underlying skeletal mismatch. The fix isn't just moving the teeth — it's moving them into a properly aligned arch, which usually requires full Invisalign or fixed appliances.
  • Rotations of canine teeth, even small ones. Canines are difficult to rotate because of their root shape, and short aligner series typically don't include the attachments needed.
  • Cases that look mild but where the patient also wants the bite corrected. Bite correction generally requires the full prescription regardless of how the teeth appear.
  • Cases where previous orthodontic treatment failed and the teeth have shifted significantly. These are technically "relapse" cases but often need full Invisalign to address what wasn't corrected the first time.

Dr. Rabinovich will tell you honestly at the consultation whether your case qualifies for Express or Lite, or whether full Invisalign is the right tool. If short-term Invisalign isn't appropriate, we'll explain why and quote both options so you can compare. We don't push a longer treatment than your case needs, and we don't try to fit a moderate case into a short product just because it looks appealing.

Cost Structure for Short-Term Invisalign

Pricing for Invisalign Express and Lite is structured differently from full Invisalign. The exact fees are quoted at the consultation, but the general structure:

  • Invisalign Express is typically the lowest fee — designed for the shortest, simplest cases.
  • Invisalign Lite sits between Express and Comprehensive.
  • Both products are billed as a single all-inclusive fee covering aligners, attachments, refinements, and retainers — the same structure as full Invisalign.
  • Insurance coverage applies the same way as full Invisalign. Most dental plans don't distinguish between Invisalign products.
  • In-house financing is available at zero percent interest for any product tier.

For very short cases, the time savings sometimes matter more than the cost savings. A 4-month case completes before the start of a school year or before a wedding more reliably than a 12-month case. Worth factoring in when planning.

Pre-Cosmetic and Pre-Restorative Use Cases

One specific scenario where short-term Invisalign is particularly useful: orthodontic preparation before cosmetic or restorative dentistry.

If you're planning veneers, crowns, or significant whitening, the cosmetic work produces a better result on properly aligned teeth. Veneer technicians can compensate for some misalignment, but the natural-looking result comes from working with well-positioned teeth rather than disguising poorly positioned ones. The typical sequence: Invisalign Express or Lite first to align the teeth, then the cosmetic dentist completes the veneers or whitening on the aligned arch.

This coordinated approach is more common than people realize. If you're considering veneers and your dentist or cosmetic dentist hasn't suggested pre-treatment alignment, it's worth asking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just ask for Invisalign Express because my case looks mild?

You can ask, but the recommendation is based on the exam, not on what looks appropriate from photos. A case that looks mild in a mirror might still need full Invisalign due to bite considerations, rotations, or movement specifics that aren't visible to the eye. We tell you honestly at the consultation which product fits.

Why is Invisalign Express so much cheaper than full Invisalign?

The fee reflects what's actually being delivered: fewer aligners, less planning complexity, shorter treatment time, fewer office visits. The product is designed for cases that genuinely don't need the full prescription. The savings aren't a discount on full Invisalign — they're the cost of a different (smaller) product.

If my case is borderline, should I pay more for full Invisalign to be safe?

Not as a precaution, no. If your case is genuinely treatable with Express, full Invisalign won't produce a better result — it'll just include unnecessary aligners. If your case is borderline-too-complex for Express, we recommend full Invisalign because the result depends on it. Dr. Rabinovich will give a specific recommendation rather than letting cost preference drive the product choice.

Does Invisalign Express require attachments and IPR?

Sometimes. Even short cases may need a few attachments or minor IPR for certain movements. Whether your specific case needs them is determined at the planning stage after the digital scan. If yours does, they're included in the standard Express fee at our practice.

If I start with Express and it turns out I need more aligners, what happens?

Two options. Some patients agree to a refinement — additional aligners ordered after the original prescription to fine-tune. Others upgrade to full Invisalign mid-treatment, with the original Express fee credited toward the new fee. The right path depends on how much additional movement is needed. We discuss this at the consultation and again if the case progresses differently than expected.
