What Invisalign Actually Is — and What It Isn't

Invisalign is a system of custom-made clear plastic aligners that gradually move teeth into a planned position. Each set is worn for about one to two weeks, then swapped for the next set in the series. A typical case uses 20 to 40 aligners over 9 to 18 months.

Invisalign is not a generic clear retainer or a mail-order aligner system. The aligners are designed in software from a digital scan of your teeth, with each tooth's movement planned in three dimensions by a trained orthodontist. Most cases also involve attachments (small tooth-colored bumps bonded to specific teeth to give the aligners grip) and sometimes IPR (light polishing between teeth to create space when crowding is the issue). These elements are what make Invisalign actually move teeth, not just hold them in place.

Direct-to-consumer aligners shipped without in-person orthodontic supervision are a different product entirely. They don't include attachments, IPR, or mid-treatment refinements, and outcomes are not comparable. The American Association of Orthodontists has issued formal cautions about at-home aligner systems. If cost is the concern, the financing options below are designed to make professionally-supervised Invisalign accessible without resorting to mail-order alternatives.

The Invisalign Treatment Process at MHR Orthodontics

Step 1: Complimentary Consultation

Your first visit is complimentary. Dr. Rabinovich examines your bite, discusses your goals, and tells you honestly whether Invisalign is a good fit for your case. If it isn't, he'll explain why and walk through the alternatives (LightForce 3D-printed braces, InBrace lingual braces behind the teeth, or traditional metal braces). No-pressure consultations are how we operate.

Step 2: Digital Scan and Treatment Plan

If you decide to proceed, we take a digital intraoral scan — no putty impressions. The scan goes into Invisalign's planning software, where Dr. Rabinovich personally designs your treatment plan: which teeth move first, where attachments go, whether IPR is needed, and how many aligners the case will require. You see a digital preview of the planned movement before any aligners are ordered.

Step 3: Receiving Your Aligners

Your aligners ship from Invisalign to our office, typically within a few weeks of plan approval. At your fitting appointment, we bond any attachments, walk through how to insert and remove the aligners, and review the wear schedule. The standard is 20 to 22 hours per day, with aligners removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing and flossing.

Step 4: Progress Checks and Refinements

You return for progress checks every 6 to 10 weeks. These visits are short — we confirm your aligners are tracking as planned, address any compliance issues, and hand off the next batch. About 70 to 80 percent of cases need refinements at the end: a second short round of aligners to fine-tune the result. Refinements are included in our Invisalign treatment fee at no additional cost.

Step 5: Retention

Once active treatment finishes, you wear retainers to hold the new position. Without retention, teeth want to drift back — this is the most common reason adults end up needing Invisalign in their forties after teen-era braces. We provide clear retainers at the end of treatment and review the wear schedule.

Who Invisalign Is For

Invisalign works well for adults and teens with mild to moderate alignment issues, including:

  • Crowding — teeth that overlap, twist, or sit out of line
  • Spacing — gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, and crossbite in many cases
  • Post-braces relapse, where teeth have shifted years after teen orthodontic treatment
  • Open bite where the front teeth don't meet when biting down

Invisalign is less well-suited to severe skeletal discrepancies, significant vertical tooth movements, and complex rotations of canine teeth. For those cases, fixed braces (LightForce, InBrace, or traditional metal) generally produce better results. Dr. Rabinovich will tell you which category your case falls into at the consultation.

For teens, we offer Invisalign Teen specifically, which includes compliance indicators (small blue dots that fade with wear, so parents and the doctor can verify the aligners are being worn), eruption tabs for teeth still coming in, and free replacement aligners for ones that get lost — a common teen scenario.

Cost, Insurance, and Financing

Invisalign cost is set at the consultation, after the exam and scan. The fee depends on case complexity and treatment duration. We give you a single all-inclusive Invisalign quote — no surprise charges later for retainers, refinements, or replacement aligners.

We are in-network with most traditional dental insurance plans, and we verify your orthodontic benefits during the consultation. If you don't have insurance or your plan doesn't cover orthodontics, we offer no-interest in-house financing with monthly payment plans built around the treatment duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you serve in Monmouth County?

From our Shrewsbury office, we treat patients from across the county. The closest neighborhoods are 5 to 10 minutes away. The western edges of the county (Marlboro, Englishtown, Morganville) are about 25 to 30 minutes. Most adult patients schedule appointments for early morning or late afternoon to fit around work.

How is Invisalign at a specialist different from Invisalign at a general dentist?

Any dentist can technically offer Invisalign with a short certification. A board-certified orthodontist has completed an additional two to three years of full-time specialty residency in tooth movement and bite mechanics after dental school. For complex cases, that training is the difference between Invisalign as a one-size-fits-all template and Invisalign as a precision-planned treatment. For mild cases, the difference is smaller, but you're still better served by a specialist.

What does Invisalign cost in Monmouth County?

Costs vary by practice and case complexity. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, Invisalign in the U.S. typically ranges from $3,000 to $8,000 depending on case difficulty. We provide a specific all-inclusive quote at your complimentary consultation.

Do you offer Invisalign for children?

In limited cases, yes. Most children do better with Phase 1 interceptive treatment (a short course of fixed appliances or partial braces) or wait for Phase 2 treatment in adolescence. Whether Invisalign is appropriate for a specific child depends on the development of their teeth and bite, which Dr. Rabinovich evaluates at the consultation.
