Little Silver is one of the closest towns to our office. From the Markham Place School area, the downtown along Branch Avenue, or the train station, the drive to MHR Orthodontics is typically 5 to 8 minutes. That proximity matters because braces treatment runs 18 to 30 months on average, with visits every six to eight weeks. A 7-minute drive turns those appointments into a quick errand rather than a planning exercise.

This page covers what we offer, when first orthodontic evaluations make sense, and what to expect at a first visit.

Meet Dr. Martin Rabinovich, Board Certified Orthodontist

dr rabinovich orthodontist shrewsbury monmouth county

Dr. Rabinovich grew up in Marlboro and trained at Rutgers University, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, and the University of Colorado, where he completed his orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedics residency and earned a Master of Science in Dentistry. He is board certified, an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and a member of the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, and the Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society. His residency at Colorado included extensive work with cleft lip and palate cases, which built strong judgment for growth and airway issues in younger patients.

That pediatric experience is part of why Little Silver families with kids in the elementary school years are a strong fit for the practice. First orthodontic evaluations are an area where specialty training matters.

When to Bring Your Child in for a First Visit

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. That can sound early. For most kids it is. About 80% of children evaluated at age 7 will not need treatment yet; they go home with a recommendation to come back in a year or two.

The reason the age-7 check matters is the other 20%. There is a small group of orthodontic issues that get harder to treat after the jaw and palate have finished growing. Catching those early lets us plan treatment around the child's natural growth (Phase 1 / interceptive treatment) rather than fighting it later.

Specific signs that warrant a Little Silver family to come in sooner rather than later:

  • Severe crowding visible as adult teeth come in
  • Crossbite (the upper teeth do not properly cover the lower teeth)
  • Thumb-sucking continuing past age 5
  • Mouth-breathing as a habit
  • Frequent biting of the cheek or tongue
  • Asymmetry in how the jaw closes
  • A pediatric dentist who has specifically mentioned any of the above

If none of these apply, the first orthodontic check is still worthwhile around age 7, but the recommendation is usually to wait and watch. The visit is free either way.

Our Orthodontic Services for Little Silver Patients

Traditional Metal Braces

Stainless steel brackets and archwires. Modern brackets are about half the size of older designs. Handles the widest range of cases. Works whether or not the patient remembers about them, because they are bonded to the teeth.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Same mechanics, tooth-colored brackets. Popular with teens at Red Bank Regional High School who want a more subtle look.

LightForce 3D Printed Braces

Custom 3D printed clear brackets shaped to each tooth. The custom fit often results in fewer adjustment visits and a more precise outcome compared to off-the-shelf brackets.

InBrace Lingual Braces

Hardware placed on the tongue side of the teeth, completely invisible from the front. Common request from Little Silver adults in client-facing professions.

Invisalign and Spark Clear Aligners

Removable transparent trays. Best for mild to moderate cases. Requires wearing the aligners about 22 hours a day to work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces in Little Silver

How close are you to Little Silver?

Most Little Silver addresses are 5 to 8 minutes from our office at 20 White Road in Shrewsbury. The most direct route is Branch Avenue west to Sycamore Avenue, then south to White Road. The office has its own parking lot.

What is Phase 1 / early orthodontic treatment?

Phase 1 is orthodontic treatment that happens between ages 7 and 10, while a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth. It addresses problems that are easier to fix during active growth, like crossbite, severe crowding, narrow jaw, or thumb-sucking effects. Phase 1 usually lasts 9 to 18 months and uses partial braces, expanders, or other appliances. After Phase 1, the child takes a break (often 1 to 2 years) while the remaining adult teeth come in, then begins Phase 2 (full braces or aligners) around ages 11 to 14. Most kids do not need two phases; the age-7 evaluation tells us which path makes sense for your child.

Will my child lose baby teeth normally while in braces?

Yes, and we plan around it. If a child starts treatment with some baby teeth still in place (which is common in Phase 1 or in younger Phase 2 patients), those baby teeth will fall out on their own schedule during treatment. We do not glue brackets to baby teeth that are about to fall out, and we adjust the treatment plan as adult teeth erupt. The brushing routine is the same: brush thoroughly around the brackets and the loose tooth, and let nature handle the rest.

What happens if I lose or break my retainer?

Call us and we will arrange a replacement. Replacements take roughly two to three weeks to make (a new scan, manufacturing time, fitting visit). In the meantime, do not panic; teeth will not drift back overnight. But the longer you go without a retainer, the more shifting you will see. Replacement retainers have a separate cost beyond the original treatment fee; for kids and teens whose retainers tend to disappear at school or in lunchboxes, some families keep a spare set.

Will treatment affect my child's confidence at school?

It almost always improves over the course of treatment, even though the first few weeks of braces can feel awkward. Kids tend to be less self-conscious about braces than parents expect, partly because so many other kids at the school have them too. For kids who are particularly sensitive about appearance, the clear ceramic option or LightForce 3D printed braces are less visible than traditional metal. Color band changes at adjustment appointments are also a small fun ritual for younger patients — many kids look forward to picking their colors. The first few days after each adjustment can include some soreness; pain reliever and soft foods cover it.
